grassfire:

and look, hey, i try to avoid the discourse as much as possible because as an intellectual exercise it’s tantamount to jacking off into the void, but there’s something about this particular combination of taking all the arguments, issues, and scholarly work that has been done by women examining the commercial porn industry, then doing a lazy surface level reading and a few word swaps to use it as a prop to claim that women en masse are doing irreversible harm to young gay men is just…

i’m a pretty zen guy these days. i don’t get angry much, if ever. but god, i hate this mlm fetishisation discourse so much. it’s spoilt and insular and built on a foundation of misogyny and caulked with some savage homophobia against anyone who doesn’t fall into lockstep.

it’s not the first time the slashcourse has tried this line of thinking (the actions of women do great harm to this group of men according to a conveniently fluid and ever-changing rubrick of what sexual and/or romantic acts are allowed), but this is the first time i’ve seen this horseshit lacquered up with a glossy veneer of social justice and it bugs the hell out of me.

you should absolutely question, examine and get to the heart of homophobia when you encounter it. you should call into question homophobic acts and material when you encounter it. no doubt, no issue. but if you’re measuring homophobia by setting an impossible lofty standard of what you consider allowable content and going ‘anything better than this sky high unobtainable goal is allowed but anything under this is fetishization and deliberately harming gay and bi men, therefore i have carte blanche to start the war drums’ then that’s just a) devaluing the definition of homophobia and its impact as a serious concept, and b) stacking the deck in order to give you an excuse to yell at people, and by ‘people’ i mean ‘women’.

it’s so much effort, so much anger, so much stupid pointless effort wasted on something with .000000001% societal impact when like… the lesbian porn industry is right there. real people, yuri anime, whatever; there’s a billion issues that deal with actual measurable effects of the commodification of lesbians and conveniently enough there’s a never-ending pile of homophobic objectification to wade through right there. use your anger on something useful for a change, y’know? gay fanfiction doesn’t mean diddlyshit.

anyway. that’s quite enough of this. i have a quest bar to eat and a cat to pat.
